the apple fields (& my horrific confessions about orchard fruit)

the person that drives an hour to visit an apple orchard and doesn't actually pick or purchase a single apple...yep that's me. however I was in good company and many apples were picked & purchased by my companions.  as usual I was distracted by the foliage. speaking of which apple orchards frequented by the public although advertised as a fantasy of autumn harvest delight  in reality are merely rows and rows and rows of trees surrounded by fallen fermenting fruit. I discovered something new about myself...I am a fruit snob. the fallen fermented fruit was not organic and I had convinced myself they were potentially diseased. yes this is the same woman that drank city water out of a dirty bucket on the streets of Managua because it was hot and the water was cold. hmmm. later that day I went to the wegman's and purchased a few enchanted honey crisp apples (the real fruit of the gods) from the apple trolley in the store and didn't feel an ounce of guilt at not supporting the local farmers! egads! all that to say even though I didn't fill my goody bag with apples, I was able to tapp into the fantastic autumn harvest delight of my imagination.

ok they weren't diseased.

summer fun

photo shoot

I rarely shoot portraits, but I made an exception in this case. good times. nothing like good friends, abandoned houses and dream catchers.

everything and the kitchen sink

I was visiting a dear friend in charlotte, NC and as usual I was able to talk him into joining me on a photography adventure. we stumbled on this old abandoned house on the outskirts of town and my cup runneth over! I spoke to one of the neighbors and found out that harris teeter was fixing to tear the house down and replace it with a new location. urban sprawl...the demise of lives gone by. I'll be posting a couple of my other photographs on my website. this one makes me happy. as I looked out the windows over the sink I allowed my imagination to wander. the lives lived in this house were fascinating!

field trips

ahhh the rem(a)inders of youth. spring was always marked by field trips to the mall. elementary school especially brought about the monotony of yet another journey to the national air & space museum. even to this day I hesitate to return...something about the smell of the carpets and large metal objects protruding from the ceiling waiting to drop on my head at any moment deter me the most, but I did finally return and much to my surprise the one object of bliss that made those long days of yesteryear endurable was still available to purchase, astronaut ice cream, a yummy yet over priced delight to be saved for enduring the bus ride home. while I debated over reliving my childhood I came to the conclusion that sometimes the comforts of childhood memories are better left in the heart and not on the palette.

reminiscing

I've always fancied myself to be a bit of an old soul, perhaps that is why I love new orleans so much. all the streets are haunted with the mingled souls of those who have gone before, and those souls alive and well that yell..."I see you over there! don't you do it! don't you take a photo of me under the funky butt sign!" this is an image I shot before katrina...when the city was still alive and bursting with its original flavor.

sleeping giant

we decided to get out and enjoy the warm (50's) degree weather and hike at sleeping giant park. it was nice to get out and see some more of the state. I guess I was more focused on enjoying the time with my family than shooting photogs. however I did find myself quite delighted with this cluster of pines. suddenly I was back in my childhood camping in northern california.
*contented sigh* there is something truly magical about tall trees.
